STANFORD TENNIS

From the March Newsletter: "It has been an up and down season for our teams to date. But both are buidling for a strong finish, and our coaches are excited about what lies ahead . . . ".

And Now: CONGRATS to our unbelievable Women's Team on winning the program's 18th National Team Championship. Seeded probably rightfully at #12, in the last 4 matches in the NCAA Championships this amazing group of young, never-say-die competitors defeated the #'s 5, 4, 1 and 3 seeds successively for the Title! Special Kudu's to Coaches Lele Forood and Frankie Brennan on their 7th National Team Championship together as a coaching team!

Our young Men's Team continued to make fantastic improvement throughout the year, but fell a little short in the 1st round of the Championships.

             WOMEN’S TEAM PAGE

WOW WHAT A YEAR!!  Shocking (sort of), Exhilarating (yes), Unexpected (to everyone but us), Underestimated (absolutely).  So the 12th seed got it done, and Frankie and I could not be prouder of a group of players for their perserverance, positive attitude, togetherness, and spirit to be so far down in so many matches in Urbana, IL and find ways to win!!!!!

And then to top it off, Nicole Gibbs joins a group of Stanford legends (Patty Fendick, Sandra Birch, Laura Granville and Amber Liu) by winning her 2nd  singles titles.  She, Kathy Jordan and Linda Gates have now acheived a career singles, doubles and team title!

But this year was about all 8 team members contributions to our 17th NCAA title (and 18th overall national championship)!  It took stellar doubles from senior Stacey Tan and sophomore Ellen Tsay, very clutch doubles play from senior Natalie Dillon and freshman Krista Hardebeck, and Gibbs and junior Kristie Ahn’s performance in the USC upset by getting the only win in the entire year against #1 ranked Christian/Santamaria, to help secure that win.

We got very important contributions this year as well from freshman Lindsey Kostas as she saw lots of action in singles earlier in the year and from junior Amelia Herring, who got in some big doubles action with Kristie Ahn several times this season.

We will have a great nucleus back next year to defend our title but for now we want to honor our seniors Stacey Tan and Natalie Dillon as they move on to graduation!  We also say farewell and good luck to Nicole Gibbs, as she moves on to her professional tennis career.

Thanks again to everyone who continues to support Stanford Women’s Tennis and we look forward to seeing you this summer at the Bank of the West tournament where we will showcase our players again!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT OVER THE YEARS - IT IS WHAT MAKES STANFORD TENNIS SO SPECIAL!

                 MEN’S TEAM PAGE

We were really proud of the team this year. They kept battling every match. We were so close in so many matches, but just couldn’t get the big win we needed. We fought through some injuries, which allowed other players to step up and contribute, especially the freshman who gained a lot of valuable experience this year. If the players continue to work hard this summer, we feel the future is very bright.

We had to go on the road for the first round of the NCAA tournament this year. We played a good LSU team in Malibu, CA. We started well by winning the doubles point, but just couldn’t quite hang on for the win. We lost 4-2 in a match that had a couple of momentum swings, but unfortunately it swung the wrong way at the end.

Sophomore John Morrissey competed in the NCAA Individual Singles Championships in Urbana, IL. John lost in the first round of singles, but gained valuable experience. While in Champaign we all went to see former player Paul Goldstein’s induction into the ITA Collegiate Hall of Fame. An honor well deserved.

We received three post-season awards to date. Senior Denis Lin was named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year, a 3.85 GPA in Mechanical Engineering. Freshman Nolan Paige was selected the ITA Northwest Region Rookie of the Year. Sophomore John Morrissey was selected to the All Pac-12 Second Team.

We certainly are looking forward to next year. We are losing four players to graduation, Matt Kandath, Denis Lin, Walker Kehrer, and Sam Ecker. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors. We have three new players coming to “The Farm”, Roy Lederman (Golden Beach, FL), Yale Goldberg (Hunting Valley, OH), and Brandon Sutter (El Dorado Hills, CA). We are looking forward to their contributions to the team and our University the next four years.

We hope you have a wonderful summer. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium for the 2013-14 season.

John, Brandon, and JJ
