MEN’S TEAM PAGE
Happy New Year! Brandon, JJ, and I were very pleased with our fall season. The team worked extremely hard in practice and in strength and conditioning. Our strength coach (Lesley Moser) did an outstanding job with the team this fall. Our trainers (Michelle Vryhof & Katie Susskind) did a great job keeping the team healthy.
We had some excellent results in the early season fall tournaments. We started at the Napa Valley Classic Tournament. Six college teams, and eight players from the USTA Development Program were involved in a round robin format. It was held at the beautiful Meadowood Club in St. Helena. John Morrissey qualified for the ITA All-American Tournament in Tulsa and then went on to win his first round match before losing in a tight match in the second round. We had eight players play in the Aggie Fall Invitational at UC Davis. Jamin Ball was a finalist in the “A” flight singles, Ball & Trey Strobel won the “A” flight doubles. Nolan Paige won the “B” flight singles, and Paige & Maciek Romanowicz won the “B” flight doubles.
In the Battle in the Bay Tournament in San Francisco, Paige & Anthony Tsodikov were finalist in doubles. The ITA Regional Tournament was held at Saint Mary’s College. Morrissey & Matt Kandath were quarterfinalists, and Paige was semifinalist in singles. The final event we played was the Pacific Tigers Fall Invitational in Stockton. Robert Stineman won the singles title, and Denis Lin & Daniel Ho won the doubles. We did have one other competition, with the inmates at San Quentin prison early November. It was an amazing experience for the team.
We are looking forward to the beginning of the dual match season. We’ll open at home against Sacramento State, the team we played in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year. We have sixteen home matches this season, including the Team Indoor Qualifying tournament, January 25 & 26. Our first match is against # 26 Texas A &M Friday at 2pm, following the 10am opener with # 29 Texas Tech vs. # 27 Univ. of San Diego. The losers play Saturday at 10am, and the winners play at 2pm. The winning team qualifies for the National Team Indoor Championships at the University of Washington, Feb. 15-18.
We have an exciting non-conference home schedule beginning in February and including matches against BYU, TCU, Furman, Boise State, Nevada, Saint Mary’s, Pacific, and # 7 Pepperdine. We have five conference matches at home, beginning with USC & UCLA, Mar. 29 & 30, and concluding with Senior Day against California, April 20. We always look forward to ourtrip to La Jolla for the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships Mar. 1-3. We will make our annual trip to the Sherwood Country Club @ Westlake Village, CA for the Sherwood Cup tournament, January 18-21.
This should be another exciting year for Stanford Men’s Tennis, culminating with the 2013 NCAA Championships at Univ. of Illinois in May. The Pac-12 Team Championship again will be held in Ojai in April. We welcome you to join us at the Taube Tennis Center for another great journey!
