HAWAII THANKSGIVING WEEK TEAM TRIP @ the Fairmont Orchid on the Kona Coast, Nov. 17-27– For detailed information re: this immensely popular trip, scroll to attachment at end of this Newsletter.

(Melbourne, via Sydney, with Dick & Anne Gould: Jan. 16-26) For Information:

A big “THANK YOU” to our excellent Stanford staff, 20 Committee Chairs, 32 Host Team Families, 30 Championships Sponsors, and almost 400 Volunteers who combined to make this perhaps the greatest NCAA Championships ever!

The grounds replicated a mini-Grand Slam, the atmosphere was electric, the celebration of the history of collegiate tennis was unique, the many ancillary activities superb and the tennis was unsurpassed! Our men’s and women’s players battled as teams and individuals to the very end in front of great and enthusiastic crowds at the Taube Tennis Center. (Our coaches have too much class to say such, but how interesting it might have been if both teams had not lost their respective best “won-loss percentage” player only days before the event due to season-ending injuries!).

The interest and support of the USTA was appreciated and duly noted by the presence of the national USTA Board of Directors meeting in Palo Alto in conjunction with the Championships, and by the many events such as “College Day” and “10 & Under Tennis” which took place under auspices of the USTA.

Our special family of Tennis Team Alumni were treated to spectacular activities, under the direction of Valerie Wilson McCarthy and Stephanie Savides, not the least of which was the wonderful evening for almost 200 former men’s and women’s players hosted at the beautiful home of Craig and Nikki Johnson.

We hope you were able to be present in person, but if not, we trust you enjoyed following the Championships on the fabulous integrated streaming system set up by J. R. Keenan of Intelligence, Inc. In fact, the Stanford/NCAA web site got so many visitors (“hits”), it caused our Server to collapse on two occasions!

How proud we were to bring this fabulous event to our University and to our community!

We are poised to capitalize on the results and good will generated by this Championships in the years ahead to continue to be a major player in tennis, not only in Northern California, but beyond. With your continued support, Stanford Tennis will NOT “stand still!!” As you will read in the following “Coaches’ Pages,” Stanford Tennis has much to look celebrate from this past year, and even more to look forward to in 2012 . . . .

Bob Seaver ’40 – a former Stanford player, who went on to coach the University of Kansas to the “Big Seven” Championship in 1948, while serving is his main role as a History Professor.

We were really proud of the team this year. They kept getting better and better. We had a few bumps in the road in the middle of the season, but the guys kept working hard, both on and off the court. We had a thirteen match-winning streak that unfortunately ended in quarterfinals the NCAA’s.

We hosted the 1st & 2nd round of the NCAA’s again. We defeated Army in the first round, and then defeated Pac-10 rival Washington in the second round 4-1. We were the proud hosts of the 2011 NCAA Championships. Coach Gould & Jenny Claypool did an incredible job as tournament directors. We played Texas A&M in the round of 16. What an fantastic atmosphere it was for the team to play in, and what great support we had. This was a very tight match that went our way 4-2. With that win we were slated to play undefeated and #1 seed Virginia in the quarterfinals. The atmosphere was electric, the stadium was full, and what a match it was! It was an incredible effort by the team that came up just short, 4-3. It came down to the #3 singles and that great battle didn’t quite go our way. The guys left everything on the court - it was just a tremendous effort! We were so proud of them. I know the loss hurt, but they certainly have nothing to be ashamed of. It was so great to see a lot of former players in the stands, and it meant a lot to all of us. What a great group of former players we have - it is definitely a family!

Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher competed in the NCAA Individual Championships. Ryan lost in the first round, Bradley got to the quarterfinals of singles. They had a great run in doubles, losing in the finals to Texas A & M. The crowds for the individual event were tremendous, and very supportive. The guys really appreciated that.

We received many post-season awards. Klahn & Thacher were named ITA All-Americans for the second straight year, as well as the Pac-10 Doubles Team of the Year. Klahn was selected 1st team All Pac-10, Ryan Thacher & Alex Clayton were named to the 2nd team. Greg Hirshman was selected for the Elite 88 Award for the second straight year. The award is given to the male player with the highest GPA competing in the NCAA Championships.

We certainly are looking forward to next year. We welcome three incoming freshman John Morrissey (Dublin, Ireland), Robert Stineman (Winnetka, IL), and Georgy Zerkalov (Moscow, Russia). We are looking forward to their contribution in the upcoming years. We will miss our graduating seniors Alex Clayton, Greg Hirshman, and Ted Kelly. They have done a great job in their four years on “The Farm.” We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

We hope you have a wonderful summer. We’re looking forward to seeing you at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium for the 2011-12 season.

John, Brandon, and JJ

NCAA Finalists Ryan Thacher & Bradley Klahn
